Medium: Colored Chalk on Paper

Size: 14” x 11”

Year: 2014

Description: I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Portland, ME. Located just north of where I grew up, this city has provided me with a lot of memories. In particular, the Old Port area near the water features several establishments where I’d visit throughout my life. For this impressionistic drawing, I figured I’d give chalk pastels a try. This was challenging for me, as the excess dry dust would accumulate on the paper as I worked. If I wasn’t careful, it would smudge and I’d have to rework the affected area to correct the mistake. I found that, like oil pastels, chalk pastels lend well to impressionist artwork - able to captures the shapes, lighting, and colors well, while omitting the ability to go into extreme detail.
