Title: Portland Lobster Boats
Medium: Oil Paint on Canvas
Size: 12” x 9”
Year: 2017
Description: This is the first oil painting I ever attempted. After several years of working with acrylics and watercolors, I decided to give oils a try. Inspired by classical impressionist artwork, I kept the forms and brush strokes relatively loose, while emphasizing colors and tone. This painting was good practice in understanding how oil paintings work differently than other types of paint. Understanding the drying time and ability to mix and blend oils was especially important. Significant focus was given to the reflections in the water, which is the primary aspect that encourages me to paint maritime scenes. To this day, while this is only a small painting, it still holds a spot among the group of paintings I’m most proud of.
