Description: Handmade artwork is unique. It represents commitment to craft, passion, skill, and time. And when I mention “time”, I’m not just talking about the time it took just to make a specific piece of art. I also mean the time required to practice, experiment, and develop the skill required to produce artwork at a certain level, which can take decades. I think these aspects are what draws people to handcrafted artwork. They are looking for something unique. They are looking for something that they can appreciate not just for the aesthetic value, but also for the effort that was put into creating it.
These reasons are also why handmade artwork is sought after for meaningful gifts. In this case, I was approached by a prospective client about an oil painting commission for his father. Knowing his father’s passion for his new Porsche 911 and recognizing my dedication to automotive artwork, the client saw an opportunity to obtain a unique personal gift for his father. The opportunity to produce a painting like this means so much to me and I truly enjoyed each second of the painting process for this one.
The reference photo was a great composition that not only featured the vehicle prominently at a pleasing angle but also featured a background of trees and greenery that complimented the color and tones of the car’s paint. I enjoyed painting the rigid structure of the car with controlled brushstrokes while getting a little looser with the organic shapes in the background. When discussing the commission with the client, I asked if the structure in the background should be painted. He indicated that the structure was his father’s garage, which was also a point of passion for his father and should be kept in the painting, even if it was just a hint of a much larger building. I love that little detail in this painting. While it might not seem like a significant detail to someone unfamiliar with the subject matter, it’s truly significant to the recipient. Those are the kinds of details that you only get through custom commissioned artwork.
