Title: Ken Miles Ford GT40

Medium: Oil Paint

Size: 3’ x 3’

Year: 2022

Description: This oil painting depicts Ken Miles driving the GT40 during the 1966 Le Mans race. I painted this one after watching the movie “Ford v Ferrari”. It’s a fantastic movie, even if you’re not particularly interested in cars or motorsports. This one was painted on a 3’ x 3’ canvas and I put an exceptional amount of time into it. Overall, I estimate that it took roughly 40 hours to complete. Half of the time was spent on the line drawing alone. Obviously, the other half of the time was spent painting, which included a few occasions when I had to go back and make some significant corrections. I was going for more of a realistic image in this one, so extra care was put into detail and precision. Because I adapted this painting from several different reference images, I learned a lot about color and shading from various angles on this one. For instance, slightly warmer tones of blue were used on the front of the car (compared to those used toward the rear) due to the angle of the sunlight. Additionally, detailed shading was used on the side of the care to portray the damage the car sustained throughout the race.

Realistic oil painting of the 1966 Ford GT, driven by Ken Miles in Le Mans. This painting shows the car at an angle as it makes its way along a banked curve. The car is painted light blue and red, with white racing striped and the number 1.
