Venice Gondolas in the Morning
I recently had another wonderful opportunity to collaborate with a local business on a new painting. My friend, Tom Zippelli, is in the process of opening another Salt and Vine restaurant in Frederick, MD. As I did for his first Salt and Vine in Olney, MD, I offered to paint another unique landscape to adorn the walls of his new restaurant. Drawing inspiration from a reference photo I received from the Retirement Travelers, I painted this Venice scene on a 4’ x 3’ canvas to capture the essence of one of Italy’s most famous and celebrated cities. As I am a fan of impressionist artwork and strive to apply my own version of the impressionist style to my paintings, Venice has been on my to-do list since I first saw some of Monet’s paintings of this beautiful city. Given the size of this painting and the prominence of its future display location, I spent a great deal of time on this one. I started with a detailed drawing to ensure my proportions and content were correct. I then worked on various parts of the painting over many sessions, including repainting the water several times to get the color tones just right. Overall, I estimate I spent about 40 hours on this painting, an effort that was entirely worth it, given the results. I’m excited to see this painting at Salt and Vine in Frederick when it opens in a few more months.
