      <image:title>Tom Alberi | Artist Blog - First Commission Complete!</image:title>
<image:caption>Back in August, I had the pleasure of being contacted by one of my neighbors back on the street where I grew up in Maine. She had seen my website and had recently noticed that my online store just opened. After a few email exchanges and an in-person meeting during a vacation to visit my parents, she commissioned me to paint a picture of her house. This was a very special painting for me. Not only was it my first official commission, but it was for a dear neighbor that I have known since a very early age. Additionally, her son and I were very good friends growing up and I estimate I spent as much time at their house as I did in my own back then. Being on site in person during vacation was a great opportunity to get the reference imagery I needed for the painting. Given the angle of the house, I determined that the morning light would be best. Golden hour would have been ideal, but given the trees to the east, that would have been too early to get any sunlight on the house. So, I had to wait until about 10 am to start getting the best pictures. You can notice the shadows from the trees in the front yard as the sun was continuing to rise. After capturing several angles, I had enough to take home and start painting.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Tom Alberi | Artist Blog - Water Lamborghini</image:title>
<image:caption>I tried something a little different with this one. While most of my paintings lately have been impressionist-style representations of reference photos, I decided to try a mix of classic impressionism with modern subject matter. In this case, I drew inspiration from Monet’s Water Lily paintings and added an orange Lamborghini Miura. While I used reference photos to help me with the subject details and composition, this painting was not a recreation of those exact photos. This allowed me to adjust the angle of the vehicle for the right composition, while giving me the freedom to place the water, lilies/lily pads, and reflections where I wanted them. I was certainly a fun challenge to figure out the reflections and lighting without a true reference image. Overall, I’m happy with how this one turned out. Should I do more of these?</image:caption>

<image:title>Tom Alberi | Artist Blog - Falken Porsche 911 GT3R Oil Painting - Still Finding My Oil Painting Style</image:title>
<image:caption>Just finished this one a few weeks ago and finally got a chance to take a decent picture of it. I found the reference photo on the account of @Customer_Racing on X and thought it would make a great subject for a quick oil painting study. This one gave me another opportunity to refine my style as I seek looser, more impressionistic interpretations of my subjects. I worked quickly with this one, but with focused intent all the way through. The layering process I use, continues to help me adjust shapes, colors, and tones as I go. You can see the progression in the gallery below. I’m happy with my progress toward defining my own style. Hitting that impressionistic style while achieving an image that is recognizable, yet far from realistic is a challenge, for sure. You can see that some of my edges are still too defined, such as the transition between the blue on the side of the car and the tires/background. If you get a chance, please let me know what you think! Would love to hear from you all if you want to stop by my X or Insta accounts, or just want to drop me a note via the contact page. Feedback is always appreciated!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Just finished another oil painting. This one is a Mercedes AMG GT3 in a garage setting. As with the Porsche RSR that I just painted, I used the paint layering technique on this one as well (see the in-progress shots below). This gives me the opportunity to start with rough shapes and then refine the forms as I add more layers. I’m continuing to progress toward the impressionism style I’m trying to achieve. While I’m not quite there yet, I’m happy with the progress. Reference photo reference courtesy of Rob Woodham.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Just finished this oil painting a few weeks ago on a 12” x 16” canvas. I tried a new method this time by laying paints in several iterations. To do this, I had to thin the lower layers out using Gamsol. For each successive layer, less Gamsol was used, until I was working with just pure oil paint on the final layer. This method allowed me to start out with rough shapes initially, with continued refinement along the way. If you look through the gallery below, you’ll notice that I made some significant adjustments to the shape of the car by the end of the process. <image:caption>I just finished coding up a new generative art project in p5.js (javascript). This one takes a simpler approach, compared to Race Tracks. There’s beauty in simplicity and I wanted to create something simple, yet pleasing to look at. It was a good study in color and spatial composition. As with Race Tracks, you can generate as many of these as you want for free! CLICK HERE</image:caption>

While I considered only releasing it as an NFT collection (which is still an option - see link in on the Race Tracks page), I made the decision to allow anyone to generate an save as many of these as they’d like. Ultimately, I’m more interested in sharing this with you all then making money on it. <image:caption>Been a while since I posted an update. Lots of stuff going on lately. However, I haven’t been too busy to think about my next project. In fact, I’ve picked up something that I started working on a while ago and have decided to finish and release it. This particular project is digital, rather than physical, so a little different than my last few artworks. This image provides a small hint of what’s to come. Stay tuned and keep checking for updates.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tom Alberi | Artist Blog - Better Late than Never</image:title>
<image:caption>About a year after I started it, I finally finished this oil painting of a Ferrari 458 that raced in the Dayton 24 several years ago (don’t know exactly which year). While the painting isn’t particularly large (only 12” x 16”), I had some challenges when painting it. I started off with a decent line drawing, which was promising. However, when I painted the top portion of the background, I realized that many of the colors were not correct and the shapes were not aligned properly. It took me some time to determine that I’d just have to repaint the whole background. Once I finished painting the background for the second time, I temporarily lost interest in the painting, not to mention the weather was getting warmer and I wanted to spend more time outside. So, the painting sat in my studio in an unfinished state until I decided to get back to it a few weeks ago. I’m not sure what spurred me to start again (might have been an inspiring Instagram post), but I’m glad I picked up the paint brush again. For this one, I decided to keep it a little more loose and stick to more of an impressionist style. I even played around with the palette knife around the front part of the car, which is indicated by the slightly higher build-up of paint in that area. While it can be fun to try to create super realistic paintings, I enjoy the challenge of loose painting and feel like the results exhibit a little more character. I’ll likely continue exploring this style for a little while. Recognition once again goes to Rob Woodham (@robwoodham on Instagram) for the reference picture. Hopefully, it won’t be a year until my next painting :P</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here’s a close-up of one of the tops in the process of drying. I gave the tops about 2 days to cure completely at room temperature. Since my workshop is in our in-law quite garage (separate from our main garage) and is not temperature controlled, I put the tops in the in-law suite kitchen to ensure that the temperature was warm and consistent enough for the glue to properly cure.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tom Alberi | Artist Blog - End Table Woodworking Project</image:title>
<image:caption>Both bottoms were glued up as a single piece to start, which was then cut in half later. This allowed me to maximize the wood surface area. I used biscuit joints to ensure a solid structure was created between the boards. You can see the pencil marks used to mark where the biscuits were inserted and to ensure proper alignment of the boards. The relatively heavy jointer was placed on top to keep the boards from bowing up while clamped. Again, the in-law suite kitchen provided an ideal environment for the glue to cure.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tom Alberi | Artist Blog - End Table Woodworking Project - Cross Members</image:title>
<image:caption>Cross members were used in the design to provide lateral stability and provide support for the table tops and bottom shelves. Similar to the legs, a table saw and chop saw were used to cut the legs to size. Tenons were also cut at each end of the cross member using a band saw. In this case, the tenons were cut slightly longer than width of the legs, which allowed for the excess material to be cut from the tenons after the cross members were assembled with the legs, providing a level surface with the legs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here’s a quick 8” x 8” oil painting study I did a few weeks ago using a reference photo taken by my good friend, Rob Woodham. In this study, I tried using a cross hatching technique, which I think turned out really well, as I was going for an impressionism look on this one. Of course, it helps to have amazing reference photos like Rob’s to work from!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Last night I had the distinct pleasure of witnessing one of my paintings prominently displayed at the new Salt and Vine restaurant in Olney, MD. This particular painting is of the Tuscany countryside and was a gift to my friend who owns the restaurant. My family and I were graciously invited to the soft opening of the restaurant last night and it was an incredible experience. Salt and Vine has a beautiful aesthetic, absolutely phenomenal food, and a fantastic drink selection to accompany it all. It is truly an honor to see my painting on the wall in such a wonderful establishment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tom Alberi | Artist Blog - For the Love of Impressionism</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the years, I’ve been exposed to many different art styles, each of which has impacted my artistic vision in a different way. Out of all of those styles, impressionism has become my favorite. From Alfred Sisley, to Camille Pissarro, to (of course) Claude Monet, each impressionist provides a window into their artistic interpretation of the scenes they paint, without the constraints of precision and reality imposed in other art styles. Even though this style may seem like it it takes little effort to put some roughly defined shapes onto the drawing/painting surface, it actually requires an incredible amount of skill and patience to pull off correctly. While my engineering brain pushes me to create art which most exactly represents reality (as you may see in some of my artwork), I’m drawn to the impressionism style more and more. To this end, my latest piece is an oil pastel drawing of Scott Dixon’s Ford GT from Sebring in 2017, drawn on 11” x 14” Bristol vellum. This piece was drawn with the intent to capture the reference imagery provided by Rob Woodham, but with an impressionist interpretation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tom Alberi | Artist Blog - For the Love of Impressionism</image:title>
<image:caption>This is not my first attempt at creating an impressionist artwork. One of my earlier examples is shown to the right. I created this painting of some lobster boats in Portland, ME in 2017 as my first oil painting. What drew me most to painting this scene was the reflections in the water, something that always captivates me when I see similar imagery in classic impressionist masterpieces. Through this painting and subsequent pieces, I’ve started to hone my impressionist style. Speaking of style, that’s another thing that draws me to impressionism. Compared to realistic drawings and paintings, impressionism provides more flexibility in defining one’s own style. I’ve found that the better my realistic drawings get, the more they look like other artists’ realistic drawings (although, admittedly, not as good.) And if the artwork is realistic enough, why not just have a photograph? Don’t get me wrong, I love and appreciate super realistic artwork. It’s a level of precision and skill that takes decades to perfect, which I admire very much. However, I find that I can be a little more creative and set my artwork apart from others by going down the impressionism path.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tom Alberi | Artist Blog - For the Love of Impressionism</image:title>
<image:caption>As always, I took my time with this one. Starting with a blank sheet of vellum, I sketched out the reference line work in pencil, then applied the color, starting at the top of the image and working downward. Oil pastels behave similarly to oil paint in some ways (it can be tough to overlap some colors, for example), but present other challenges. For example, as the color is applied to the sheet, not all of the pastel material is transferred to the surface, leaving little clumps of color sitting around. If you’re not careful, these can easily smudge on top of already colored areas. The photo to the left shows me filling in the black areas under the car. I had to gently brush the excess pigment off the surface every few minutes to ensure that the black did not smudge over lighter surrounding areas. I hope you enjoy this new piece, as I plan to draw and paint more impressionist style artwork in the future. Please let me know what you think! - Tom</image:caption>

<image:caption>This painting took many hours, much longer than any of my other pieces. The delay was worth it, as I wanted to make sure I got it right. Sure, it’s not a photo realistic representation of the actual car, but that’s not what I was going for. I prefer that my traditional visual artwork, whether it be a drawing or painting, include aspects of individual style and interpretation. After all, if all paintings were photo realistic, there wouldn’t be much variety and that would be, well…boring.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Tom Alberi | About the Artist</image:title>
<image:caption>My artwork embraces the impressionism style, featuring loose brush strokes and a focus on tone and color. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a passion for creating artwork. I’ve explored many different styles throughout my artistic journey, having determined that impressionism is my clear favorite. I appreciate that this style produces imagery that clearly represents the subject, while simultaneously taking on a form that isn’t reproducible by a camera, showing clearly that the artwork is handmade in a way that is unique to the artist. Works by Monet, Sisley, Caillebotte, Pissaro, and others serve as prime examples from which I draw my inspiration for style and technique. My artwork typically centers around maritime, landscape, and automotive subjects. I owe this eclectic mix of subjects to my diversity of experiences through life. I was raised in a small town on the coast of Maine and spent significant time around the ocean, developing a love for imagery of sailboats, lobster boats, docks, and lighthouses. Additionally, my travels around the United States and countries such as Spain and France have influenced my landscape artwork. Finally, rather than taking a more traditional artist path by attending art school, I instead attended Virginia Tech, where I earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. Through this experience, I gained an appreciation for automotive subjects, leading to a desire to paint sports cars and motorsports subjects. I like to think that my portfolio includes artwork that most people can appreciate. Ultimately, that is my simple goal: to create beautiful imagery that anyone can love. You don’t have to be an art scholar or historian to enjoy my artwork. My artwork doesn’t require interpretation or deep contemplation. It’s meant to provide pleasing imagery that is accessible to everyone. However, writing along cannot adequately describe my artwork, so I encourage you to browse my portfolio to see for yourself. If you are interested in owning one of my original artworks, please stop by the online store. Finally, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me directly.</image:caption>
